As the next federal election came into view before the summer season break, concern increased that Labor would not be honouring its commitment to introduce new constraints on online (particularly sport) gaming advertising during the existing parliamentary sitting.
Those worries were well-founded, despite pressure from numerous sides and broad bipartisan political support.
The Greens made a last-ditch attempt to cooperate with the government to pass some reforms in the February 2025 sitting, however were rebuffed.
Instead, Communications Minister Michelle Rowland blamed the delay on the complexity of advertising reform and the requirement to continue assessment.
